
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9th, 1956) is an American actor and film director. He is well-known for his dramatic and comedic roles. He is an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Janet Marylyn a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks, an traveler and cook. His mother, originally called "Fraga" was from part of a Portuguese family. His father was predominantly English. Tom grew up in an extended family that he describes as "fractured". He did not have any acting experience at the college level and credits the failure to get a role in a college play as the reason for his beginning his professional career. He was an auditioner in downtown Cleveland for an open-air community theatre production. After that it was announced that he would be invited to Cleveland by the director. This was where his acting career began.
